BEITHÍOCH - AISLING DHORCHA:

This is a review of Beithíoch's Aisling Dhorcha cassette. I think the author has got a lot of valid points about the release, so I decided to publish it here.
I've also thought about trying to translate this into English, but the author's style is so unique and inargueably German that I decided it probably wouldn't make sense really.

So here it is in a slightly reduced form, courtesy of SeMael Nahash:

"Seien wir doch mal ehrlich; so ganz unter uns jungfräulichen Pastorentöchtern.
Der Black Metal ist aktuell in einer sehr zwiespältigen Phase, denn einerseits werden mittlerweile so viele - durchaus auch musikalisch sehr gelungene Werke - wie nahezu nie zuvor veröffentlicht; auf der anderen Seite kommen allerdings die meisten Aufnahmen mit einem gewissen ideologischen Unterbau in der Regel aus Teilen der Welt, in welchen die Bevormundung seitens des Monotheismus durchaus noch als Gefahr angesehen und keineswegs derart bagatellisiert wird, wie es nicht zuletzt im deutschen Sprachraum der Fall ist.
Selbst wenn ich einigen bundesdeutschen DSBM-Formationen weder das Talent noch die Befähigung absprechen will, hörenswerte Musik zu komponieren, so wird aber doch der von mir angeführte Aspekt der emotionalen Verbundenheit zur selbigen in den seltensten Fällen evoziert, denn es wird Musik gemacht, weil man es kann und weit weniger, weil man damit etwas ausdrücken möchte.

Genau in dieser Tatsache läßt sich wohl begründen, warum Ausnahmewerke wie die Demo-Veröffentlichungen von MANES, alte BURZUM- oder STRID-Werke letztlich unerreicht bleiben, denn selten wird eine solche Atmosphäre wie auf diesen und weiteren hier unerwähnten Werken beschworen, so daß ich mich immer mehr frage, mit welcher Intention gewisse Projekte überhaupt noch aktiv sind, sofern es nicht in erster Linie um Anerkennung und Erfolg geht.

BEITHIOCH ist das Projekt des gleichnamigen Iren aus Dublin, der meinen Informationen zufolge seit 2002 aktiv ist und im Jahre 2007 sein erstes Demo "Diolaim" veröffentlichte, welches von der unabhängigen bundesdeutschen Klangschmiede "Diveliz Rex" zwei Jahre später in einer kleinen Auflage auf Tonband wieder veröffentlicht wurde und welches ich bis zum heutigen Tage leider nicht hören konnte, da mir hierfür die nötige Zeit fehlte.
Der Meister hinter "Diveliz Rex" machte mich nun vor geraumer Zeit auf dieses Projekt aufmerksam, da er auch das erste vollständige Album unter dem Titel "Aisling Dhorcha" für den November diesen Jahres zur Veröffentlichung vorgesehen hatte; dieses Mal allerdings in einer höheren Auflage und vergleichsweise professioneller Aufmachung.

Seiner Aussage zufolge ist die Tonqualität der Veröffentlichung deutlich besser als die der zuvor ausschließlich auf der Netzseite verfügbaren Version zum herunter laden, so daß sich die Anschaffung gegenüber der "nackten" Musikdatei schon aufgrund dieser Tatsache wie auch der wirklich gelungenen optischen Aufmachung für Interessenten lohnen sollte.
Abgesehen davon schätze ich die Begeisterung des Mannes für die Musik, die sich in unserer Kommunikation zum Ausdruck brachte und die mich etwas an die Herren Dobberstein und Woeste aus den 90er Jahren erinnerte, deren Verdienste für die Metal-Szene kaum gebührend genug hervor gehoben werden können. Überzeugungstäter dieses Zuschnitts benötigt die Szene mehr als die tausendste DSBM-Kombo aus Norddeutschland.

Das alles wäre allerdings für mich noch kein überzeugendes Argument gewesen, hätten mich die insgesamt neun enthaltenen Stücke mit einer Gesamtspielzeit von rund einer Stunde nicht derart zu begeistern gewußt, daß ich etliche Anläufe benötigte, alleine die musikalische und emotionale Tiefe dieses Albums verinnerlichen und in diese Besprechung transferieren zu können.
Zur ausschließlich in gälischer Sprache vorgetragenen Lyrik kann ich mich an dieser Stelle bedauerlicherweise nicht dezidiert äußern, da mir diese nicht vorliegt, allerdings dürfte bereits anhand einiger Betitelungen ersichtlich sein, daß sich das Konzept unter historischen und geistesgeschichtlichen Aspekten mit der Vergangenheit von Beithiochs Volk beschäftigen dürfte.

Nach der ambienten Introduktion, die mich zunächst etwas an den Malteser von APOTHEOSIS erinnern wollte, kriecht hier das zweite Stück "An anaithnid Dorcha" in einer partiell behäbigen aber mitreißenden Monotonie aus den Lautsprechern, die mich sofort an eine stilistische Symbiose aus dem amerikanischen Projekt EA, den genialen Spaniern von HARRIDAN sowie einer Prise STRID im Stile von "Nattevandring" denken ließ, denn hier trifft eine kalte schneidende Gitarre auf Melodiebögen, welche in der Werkstatt eines Schwarzalbs nicht überzeugender hätten in Schwarzmetall gegossen und hernach mit einer stimmlichen Darbietung gehärtet werden können, die nahezu unaufgeregt und unprätentiös raunend und murmelnd die Position eines weiteren Instrumentes einnimmt, ohne auch nur einmal hysterisch oder störend wirken zu wollen.

In diesem Stile geht es mit "Dornán Talaimh" weiter; schleichend, kriechend, nahezu hypnotisch zähflüssig dringen weitere monotone und eiskalte Töne an mein Ohr, die mich zu umgarnen wissen, als stünde die Erkenntnis einer übergeordneten Wahrheit auf dem Spiel.
Die Kompositionen des Iren dürften so manchem unbedarften Hörer regelrecht langweilig erscheinen, wie ich auch bereits jetzt erahne, daß am elektronischen Schlagwerk massiv kritisiert werden dürfte, denn das stellt sich tatsächlich in weiten Teilen als äußerst spartanisch umgesetzt dar und klingt darüber hinaus nicht selten wie in einem tiefen Loch eingespielt, was auch mir zunächst etwas Kopfzerbrechen bereitete, über die gesamte Länge der Stücke aber durchaus zur Intensivierung der nahezu maschinellen Atmosphäre beiträgt.
Hin und wieder befleißigt sich der werte Herr auch eines hallenden Paukeneffekts, der Erinnerungen an das "Nachthymnen"-Album der Österreicher von ABIGOR weckt.

Wer allerdings bis dahin bereitwillig Herrn Beithioch in seine akustische Welt zu folgen verstand, der wird nun mit dem ersten teilweise geknüppelten Stück aus seiner Lethargie gerissen, denn "Arm Na Déithe" ist ungelogen das mitunter stärkste Stück monotonen Arschkaltmetals, das ich seit den seligen Tagen von STRID, frühen MANES oder den schmählich vernachlässigten norwegischen SUFFERING in dieser Intensität und kompositorischen Stringenz zu hören bekam.
Und hier offenbart sich dann auch eine nicht zu verleugnende stilistische Nähe zu dem brillanten "Unlock the Shrine"-Album von THE RUINS OF BEVERAST, die immer wieder zu resümieren ist, wenngleich sich BEITHIOCH sicherlich hinter keiner Formation verstecken müsste, denn meiner Meinung nach ist das Album so originell wie die erwähnten Referenzen selbst.

Mit einem weiteren Ambient-Stück, das ich mir sehr gut in einem japanischen Horror-Film der Güteklasse "Kairo" denken könnte, überführt uns der Ire mit dem nahezu balladesken"Súil Bhaloir" in eine schleppende Kakophonie, die zunächst etwas zu behäbig wirken mag, dann aber doch wieder die ungemeinen kompositorischen Stärken hervor hebt, die den Musiker aus einer im Grunde sehr simplen Tonfolge das Maximum an emotionaler Wirkung heraus kitzeln läßt.
Überhaupt läßt sich im Übergang vom fünften zum sechsten Stück eine gewisse stilistische Veränderung ausmachen, denn nun wird es prinzipiell doomiger, es folgen vermehrt akustische Klimpereien auf der Gitarre und insgesamt wirkt die Atmosphäre noch einmal einen Zacken lebensmüder als zuvor.
Das dürfte auch der Beweggrund für die klare thematische Trennung der beiden Seiten in "Side Aisling" und "Side Dhorcha" auf dem Tonband gewesen sein.

Erstaunlich ist hier wiederum, daß es dem Iren immer wieder gelingt, feinste Nuancen durch relativ wenige angespielte Töne zu integrieren, die im Einzelfall gar zu einem regelrechten emotionalen Ausbruch beim Hörer führen können, der sich bei mir in einem nahezu devoten Kopfnicken bsplw. beim Knallerstück "Athbhreith Lasánta" zum Ausdruck brachte, wenn hier im Stück plötzlich opulent stampfend voran geschritten wird, woraufhin sich wiederum unweigerlich die Lethargie einschleicht.
Man wird davon süchtig; ersehnt regelrecht die nächste stampfende Passage herbei, wird dann allerdings von einem derart ergreifenden und unvorhersehbaren Melodiebogen zum Ende des Stückes gepackt, daß zumindest mir der kalte Schauer der Verzückung über den Rücken lief.

Kompositorische Überraschungen solcher Finesse sind auf dem Werk alles andere als eine Seltenheit und aus diesem Grunde ist es nahezu unmöglich, alle Nuancen in wenigen Hördurchgängen zu verinnerlichen; und so hört man es wieder, und wieder, und wieder ... bis mich "Ag Stánadh Ar Shíoraíocht", gespielt von einem dahin siechenden Selbstmörder auf einer eigens unter verzweifelten Tränen gebastelten Knochensäge, in die harsche Alltagsrealität zurück stößt.

Ich habe innerhalb der vergangenen Jahre, abgesehen vom zweiten HARRIDAN-Demo, dem "Totenwerke"-Album von DEATHGATE ARKANUM oder der ersten Scheibe von THE RUINS OF BEVERAST sowie "Letharg" von FÄULNIS, wirklich selten eine derart ergreifende und tiefschürfende Black Metal-Veröffentlichung zu hören bekommen.
Werke dieser Qualität sind es, die den extremen Metal in künstlerischer Hinsicht für mich noch immer konkurrenzlos erscheinen lassen, auch wenn sicherlich an der Produktion zu bemängeln wäre, daß sie recht dumpf klingt.
Diese Tatsache konnte mich allerdings lediglich in der Gewöhnungsphase etwas irritieren, denn ab einem späteren Zeitpunkt fügte sich auch dieses vordergründige Manko in das Gesamtwerk ein.

Wer den Black Metal liebt, sollte dieses Projekt und Diveliz Rex unterstützen. Amen!
Ich lausche nun weiter ergriffen diesen in Musik gravierten verschneiten Berggipfeln am Horizont des mitternächtlichen Vollmondhimmels ..."

Beithíoch (Bay-EE-yuckh; Irish word meaning "beast") personifies pure action. The animal symbolises freedom from humanistic moral boundaries and the contemplative quandaries of the human psyche when removed from the necessity of struggle for life. Beithíoch is an idea, a resolve and a way of working. That says it all. These Irish folks deliver us US BM (WTF? - DVLZRX) with a Celtic vibe. The album is completely available for download. I went for it and it sucked me in.

Whether it's worth the download? I say yes. They succeed in making compelling and atmospheric music. No doubt about it. Lots of feedback or, like the English say: "fuzzy" guitarsounds (Ildjarn, Krieg). The guitar strings terrorize your ears, with a unceasing everlasting monotonous sound which makes you feel like cleaning your ears with sand paper. Wether it's the funeral doom parts or the ultrafast blastbeats, it makes no difference. Only the acoustic parts gives you the impression that you can share the dream of a black romantic adventure towards the fog. But all of a sudden you get carried away by the fuzzy guitars and the rolling drums.

The difference between boring as hell and thrilling is sometimes thin. The secret is hidden in the details: subtle layers of sound and hypnotic riffs find ground on a repetitive base. As far as I'm concerned Beithioch succeeds very well. The irritating guitarsounds and standard rhythms themselves are as interesting as a sink that needs a plumber, but the changing elements and nuances in the linear base are truly hypnotic!

For some people this represents the ultimate boredom. I for one have been dragged into this. You should try it out. My apologies for the fucked up mood swings."

Díolaim is made up of pieces written between 2002 and 2005. Most of the familiar trappings of black metal are here (granular production, romantically-tinged melodies…) absent however are the more egoistic tendencies which black metal has identified itself with in latter years. Instead there is a sincere, if naiive, emulation of the brevity and poignancy of greats like Ildjarn & Burzum. Despite their lack of technical flair (and many technical flaws) these pieces reveal an artistic attentiveness and a love for the esoteric that exceeds the physical limitiations of the performance.
